Cinemark, the third-largest movie theater chain in the US, is looking to have all of its more than 500 cinemas reopened by July 17. The company wants to ensure that all of its locations will be open prior to the release of Disney’s “Mulan” on July 24 and Warner Bros. “Tenet” on July 31.

Cinemark is not alone. AMC, the nation’s largest theater, has said it plans to reopen in July and Regal Entertainment also announced that all of its theaters will be open by July 24.

All three theaters temporarily closed their doors nationwide in mid-March as the coronavirus outbreak began. The closures had a devastating impact on the movie theater industry with all three chains laying off employees and predicting financial troubles as a result.

The pandemic also caused Hollywood studios to delay their summer blockbusters, which will impact the movie theaters when they reopen in July. To fill the gaps between Hollywood releases, Cinemark plans on showing classic titles at discounted prices. Films like Ghostbusters, Jurassic Park, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Goonies will be shown for $5 for adults and $3 for children.

In order to lure movie-goers back to the theaters, Cinemark is instituting strict sanitary precautions for its reopening. Staggered seating, more stringent cleaning and reduced operating hours will be implemented.

And, as an added incentive, concession prices will also be temporarily reduced. Let’s be honest – microwave popcorn just can’t compare.
