Amazon has a lot of money. And with some of that money, they’ve bought the naming rights to downtown Seattle’s arena which will house a new NHL team and the Women’s National Basketball Association’s Seattle Storm.
Amazon says they plan to name the arena…drumroll please…Climate Pledge Arena.
It’s not the catchiest name, but Amazon’s heart is in the right place. “Instead of naming it after Amazon, we’re calling it Climate Pledge Arena as a regular reminder of the importance of fighting climate change,” Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos said.
Bezos also said the renovated stadium would be “the first net zero carbon certified arena in the world, generate zero waste from operations and events, and use reclaimed rainwater in the ice system to create the greenest ice in the NHL.”
To their credit, Amazon is putting their money where their Arena name is. On Tuesday, Amazon launched a $2 billion fund to invest in climate technologies. And back in February, Bezos pledged $10 billion to launch a new Earth Fund for combating climate change, which will distribute grants to climate-oriented scientists and activists.
