Five years after its Broadway debut, the hit musical *Hamilton* continues to be all the rage.
The Hamilton movie, featuring the original cast, is a “live” recording of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical reimagining of the founding father’s life. It was captured via six cameras as it appeared on stage in New York.
Amid the COVID-19 crisis, Disney shifted the film to a direct-to-streaming release about a year before it was originally scheduled to play in theaters. And the move really seems to have paid off. Hamilton spurred a huge spike in Disney+ app downloads over the July 4th weekend.
In fact, following Hamilton’s streaming release on Friday, July 3, Disney got a nice 74% bump in Disney+ app downloads.
- From Friday through Sunday, the Disney Plus app was downloaded 752,451 times globally, including 458,796 times in the US.
That’s a HamilTON of downloads.
In mid-June, Disney Plus stopped offering a free seven-day trial offer. Disney has been banking on the Broadway musical to attract paying customers for its direct-to-consumer biz. However, it remains to be seen how many new Disney Plus customers stick around after the Hamilton hype wears off.
