You can now ~~buy~~ adopt Spot, Boston Dynamics’ famous robot dog…if you happen to have $74,500.
Sure, that sounds like a lot, but according to Boston Dynamics, you’re getting the most advanced mobile robot in the world.
Spot is designed to traverse rough terrain, can climb stairs, and still operate easily indoors. He even knows how to moonwalk! Boston Dynamics’ says that Spot is a multipurpose “mobility platform” that can be customized with different sensors and programmed to perform patrols and inspections.
Who said you can’t teach a robot dog new tricks??
“We mostly sell the robot to industrial and commercial customers who have a sensor they want to take somewhere they don’t want a person to go,” said Boston Dynamics’ lead robotics engineer, Zack Jackowski. “Usually because it’s dangerous or because they need to do it so often that it would drive someone mad. Like carrying a camera around a factory 40 times a day and taking the same pictures each time.”
Is it creepy? Maybe a little.: If the thought of a robot dog gives you majorly creepy Black Mirror vibes, you’re not alone. But Boston Dynamics will enforce a code of use for the robot: no weapon attachments and no use cases that can “harm or intimidate” people. “If there’s a harmful use, then the license would be invalidated, and the customer wouldn’t be able to use the robot,” said Michael Perry, Boston Dynamics’ vice president of business development.
Boston Dynamics has always highlighted the ways its robots could be used to improve human life. And as of yesterday, businesses, developers, and academics can purchase Spot to aid with a variety of tasks such as surveying and data collection.
