Stepping up by stepping back

On Friday, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian announced his resignation from the popular web forum’s board, asking that he be replaced by a black candidate.

Reddit said it would honor Ohanian’s request. “I want to take responsibility for the history of our policies over the years that got us here, and we still have work to do,” Reddit CEO and co-founder Steve Huffman wrote.

Ohanian also committed to using future gains from his Reddit stock to serve the black community, “chiefly, to curb racial hate.”

He has pledged $1 million to former NFL player and activist Colin Kaepernick’s Know Your Rights Camp.

Ohanian, who is married to tennis icon Serena Williams, said, “I am doing this for me, for my family and for my country. I am saying this as a father who needs to answer his black daughter when she asks, ‘What did you do?’”
