President Trump is preparing to announce a second, smaller coronavirus task force aimed specifically at combating the economic ramifications of the virus and focused on reopening the nation’s economy. The new economic task force will be separate from the main coronavirus task force, despite having some overlapping members.
“The cure cannot be worse than the problem itself,” President Trump said. “We got to get our country open.”
The question is how to balance the economic benefits of loosening coronavirus restrictions with the health threats that such actions pose. But we’ll leave that question to the government officials and medical professionals to figure out.
Meanwhile, let’s take a look at some of the numbers, published by U.S. News:
- An estimated eight in 10 counties have an official lockdown in place.
- The state of California has lost an estimated 31.5 percent of its daily GDP.
- The daily U.S. economic output is down 29 percent from the first week in March.
- The U.S. unemployment rate is now above 10 percent.
Looks daunting, huh? Don’t worry – there’s a task force for that!
